Newsletter No 6 / 11th December 2009

The Play
Thank you to parents for helping with costumes; thank you to pupils for learning their lines so well – it was a particularly “wordy” play this year; thank you to Mrs Drake for recording music for us and to Mrs Dallimore for face-painting; thank you also to Mrs Tombling for coming to school many times to help pupils with practices; thank you to all staff for their help with finding props and making scenery and particular thanks to Mrs Wilkin who has worked tirelessly teaching us the songs, and making costumes and scenery, and of course, thank you to everyone who came to watch. Finally, thank you to the PTA for serving refreshments after the evening performance. We were very pleased to raise £135.00 for Oxfam Unwrapped from the matinee performance and the raffle and £204.00 from ticket sales, for school. We are hoping to be able to purchase some side screens and other drama resources from this income.

Christmas Tree
We are most grateful to Mr and Mrs Tuckwell for kindly supplying us
with a wonderful Christmas tree again this year.

Message about the Christmas Bazaar from the PTA
Christmas Bazaar - a huge thank you to everyone who either donated, baked cakes, helped out, spent money or organised the Christmas Bazaar this year. There are too many people to name however all your efforts are much appreciated so thank you for continuing to support PTA events to raise money for the school. We made a very healthy £850 which is better than last year so well done. The evening was a great success and I think much enjoyed by the children. I spoke to Santa who said he was very pleased with all the children and as they had been so good he would come back Christmas Eve with some presents (but they must be asleep).

Wreath Making Evening & Christmas Play Bar – we are still adding up the sums for how much we made on these so expect an update next week.

Swimming Gala – Report by Lucy Banting
On 12th November 6 pupils from Stadhampton School swam in the Partnership Swimming Gala: Lucy, Issy, Alex, Benedict, Robbie and Florence. We all swam our best until the results were called out. It turned out that we had drawn with Watlington and so we had a swim-off. This was a relay and two people did back-stroke, two breaststroke and two front-crawl. But finally we beat them; we had won the trophy for 3 years running; it was victory again for Stadhampton!

Miss Heather Mould

We are pleased to announce that we have recruited a teacher for our new Foundation Stage class which starts in January 2010. Miss Heather Mould has been teaching Foundation Stage children in Bicester for the last year. She will join us for the day on Friday 4th December and meet our new Foundation Stage pupils and their parents.

James Carter, Poet-in residence, 25th November and 2nd December 2009
We are delighted to have James Carter, a local poet, in school on both Wednesday 25th November and Wednesday 2nd December. This is a one-off free opportunity, financed by Extended Services for pupils and parents to participate in this fun event. Please be reminded that pupils must be accompanied by an adult. There will be no after school sports clubs that day but pupils attending our after-school fun club will participate in the event with Mrs Howlett and Mrs Hopkins. On Wednesday 2nd December there will be a pupil poetry presentation to parents for approximately 20 minutes at 2.50pm. All welcome! This week Little Bears have enjoyed making spaceships out of tissue paper, spaceships with 5 little aliens in (from the song Five Little Men in a Flying Saucer) and paper planets. They also had fun icing biscuits and making mince pies.

Christmas Production

This year the school’s Christmas production is “Through the Wardrobe”. There will be the following performances:
1. Dress Rehearsal on Tuesday 8th December at 10am. This performance is aimed at parents who would like to bring along pre-school aged children to see the play. Little Bears Pre-School pupils will come across to see this performance.
2. Matinee Performance on Tuesday 8th December at 2pm. This performance is open to villagers,
grandparents, parents and other relatives. No limits on numbers, but no pre-school aged children please. There will be a bucket collection for Oxfam Unwrapped with a suggested donation of £1 per person.
3. Evening Performance on Wednesday 9th December at 6.30pm. Entrance to this performance is by ticket only which must be bought in advance. Tickets cost £2 each and will be limited to 2 per family in the first instance. No pre-school aged children at this performance please. Newsletter No 2 / 13th November 2009

Book Fair from 17th - 20th November 2009
A reminder that there will be a Book Fair from Tuesday 17th November to Friday 20th November. On Tuesday, from 3.30pm Parent’s Evening appointments will be held in the school hall, so for that afternoon only the Book Fair will be open in the school end of the portacabin from 3.15pm to 4.30pm. Please come along and see it over there.

Swine Flu

We currently have two pupils absent from school who are being treated for suspected swine flu. We feel that it is important to keep parents up to date with this information so that if your child is feeling very unwell and is showing symptoms that could be swine flu, you can let your GP know that there are other suspected cases in the school.

Payment for School Meals
We would like to remind parents that payment for school meals is due on Monday morning for any meal requirements in that week. Many Class 1 pupils (and a few older pupils!) seem not to be aware that they have payment for their school meals in their book bag and we are finding it quite disruptive to lessons to have to ask several pupils to go and check their book bags for any dinner money. If you think your child will not remember that there is payment in a book bag, please could you either remind them just as they are coming to school or give it directly to the class teacher yourself or to Mrs Hopkins in the school office. We would be very grateful for your help in this matter, thank you.

Children in Need – Friday 20th November
We will be helping to raise funds for Children in Need on Friday 20th November. Children are invited to wear ‘non-uniform’ clothes that day but are asked to wear ‘something spotty’ (it can be an official Pudsey bandana, but it doesn’t have to be) for a donation of £1. There will also be a sale of “bear biscuits” at 3pm in the Hall. This sale is also open to families from Little Bears. Shirley Bateman has kindly made a number of Pudsey biscuits which will be available for 50p each. In addition school pupils will have made and decorated their own Pudsey biscuits during the week and they will be given an opportunity at 3pm to buy the biscuit that they have made for 50p. Any surplus Pudsey biscuits will also be available for purchase. All proceeds from Non-Uniform Day and the sale of biscuits will go to Children in Need.

PTA Attachment “The Christmas Bazaar is nearly upon us!”

‘Notes of Harmony’ Comenius Project Developments (Turkey focus)
Turkish Day of Dance:
On Tuesday 10th November we welcomed Katrina Sapno, a professional dancer and dance instructor with West End experience, into school. Katrina led Turkish dance workshops with each class and the session culminated in a presentation to (and with!) parents at the end of the day. This enjoyable event was made possible through careful management of our Comenius Project budget.

Project Meeting in Izmir, Turkey, 4th-8th November 2009:
As mentioned last week Mrs Garrard and I recently attended the project meeting hosted by our partner school in Izmir, Turkey. This meeting was also attended by teachers from our other partner schools in Poland and Germany, enabling us to share the same experiences. During the meeting we received a tour of our partner school, attended lessons, watched a concert given by the pupils and participated in a joint meeting exchanging information and materials relating to project developments so far in each country and planning future developments. We also visited another, even bigger, school to see a contrasting range of facilities – particularly musical opportunities for pupils. We attended meetings with local dignitaries, particularly the Director of Education in Izmir and the District Governor. In addition we visited a number of places of local and national importance, including Ataturk’s summer home, the site of the House of The Virgin Mary, the ancient city of Ephesus, several museums and a mosque. We experienced a number of traditional customs including tea-drinking the Turkish way and street entertainment in the local bazaar, as well as more contemporary customs such as attending a Mozart and Tchaikovsky concert played by the Turkish symphony orchestra and swimming in the Aegean Sea! Our hosts were extremely thoughtful and welcoming and this meeting was a truly enriching experience for all involved, strengthening the links between our school communities.

Partnership Netball Tournament 2009
Congratulations to our netball team (all Y6 pupils) who won this tournament for the second year running. Thank you to Mrs Scragg, Mrs Perring, Mr Pattisson, Mrs Birtles and Mrs Roe for transporting the team. Here is a report by Peter Roe:
“We are pleased to report that the Year 6’s at Stadhampton School won the Hi-Five Netball Tournament. We won by 2 clear points by beating RAF Benson Team 1 and Team 2, Lewknor School and drawing with Watlington Primary. Thank you to Mrs Scragg and Mrs Manzie for organising this for us and to the parents who helped with the transport”.

Little Bears News

Newsletter No 1 / 6th November 2009

Happy NOVEMBER Birthday to: Jacob Day, Amy Freeman, Max Lansley, Lola Odell and Ella Perring.

During November we are focusing on the core value of UNITY

Comenius Project Developments
During the first half of this school year our focus is on Turkey; Turkish culture, history and geography, art, dance and music. It is very timely that the third project meeting will be hosted by our partner school in Izmir this week, along with teachers from all four partner schools. The visit will enable us to gain a greater understanding of the Turkish education system, experience a day in our partner primary school and see Turkish culture and architectural heritage at first hand. We are also armed with a long list of questions from our pupils so will be busy finding out the answers!
On Tuesday 10th November we are having a Turkish Dance workshop led by a professional dancer. We will be presenting a performance for parents in the Hall at 3pm – all welcome!

Cold Weather Clothing
A number of children are coming to school without coats and are, inevitably, feeling the cold at playtime. Please could all pupils come to school with a coat/jacket every day this term so they can keep warm! Thank you.

Book Fair from 17th - 20th November 2009
We are looking forward to holding a Book Fair in the school hall from Tuesday 17th November to Friday 20th November, both before and after school. The commission from the fair allows us to buy books for each classroom and the non-fiction library, so every purchase helps us to get new books for school. There are hundreds of exciting books to choose from and the leaflet sent home earlier this week, and the posters on display in the hall, show a small selection of the titles that will be available.

Catch It, Bin It, Kill It!
No doubt everyone is aware of the current NHS guidelines to help prevent the spread of cold and ‘flu’ viruses. As part of this campaign pupils have been given a free sample of Kleenex tissues this week.

Little Bears News
End of a Chapter:
Having been the face of Little Bears Pre-School for 7 years and looking after the children of many families in Stadhampton and surrounding villages during that time, we need to let everyone know that Nikki Howlett will be leaving Little Bears at the end of this term, on 18th December 2009.

Newsletter No 5 / 2nd October 2009

Happy OCTOBER Birthday to: Benjamin Duke, Sophie Hector, Oliver Lowman and Marcin Skwarek.

We are focusing on the core value of RESPONSIBILITY in the month of October

School Closure on Wednesday 30th September
Following a break in the water supply to Stadhampton and a number of surrounding villages, we had no option but to close the school on Health and Safety grounds. Unfortunately the situation was not apparent until just before the beginning of the school day, and, consequently, we were unable to give any notice of the situation. I apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Swine Flu Action Plan
All families should have received yesterday a letter about our Swine Flu Action Plan.

Year 6 Assembly for Parents and Pupils with Mr Hudson, Headteacher of Icknield Community College
As the school had to close on Wednesday the 30th September, we have rearranged the assembly for Year 6 pupils and their parents to now take place at 9.00am on Wednesday 7th October. It is envisaged that this will last for about half an hour and we hope that as many parents as possible will be able to attend. If any Year 5 parents would also like to attend, they would be most welcome.

Harvest Gifts
Thank you to everyone who donated such a wonderful array of Harvest gifts. They will be taken to the church today to form part of the village Harvest Service on Sunday.

Supporting your child at home with Mathematics
This week, every child should have brought home a booklet relating to the Mathematics they will be learning about in their particular year-group. These booklets were introduced last year, following our Maths Evenings for parents, and as all pupils have moved up a year-group, it is an appropriate time of year to distribute the ‘sequels’. If, for any reason, you have not received one please contact your child’s class teacher.

Icknield Community College Open Evening
Icknield Community College in Watlington will be holding their Open Evening on Thursday 8th October between 6 and 8 pm. Please do go along, if possible.

After School Fun Club
Thank you for the donations which have been sent in so far for the fundraising stall which the After School Fun Club would like to have at this year’s school Christmas Bazaar. We would be pleased to collect a few more items such as any unwanted birthday and Christmas presents suitable for our “Gifts Stall”. Small toiletry items would also be most welcome, which pupils would enjoy making up into gift baskets.

Presentation of our Comenius Project at the British Council, London
On Thursday 1st October I gave a presentation on our ‘Notes of Harmony’ Comenius Project to a large audience of delegates at the British Council in London. I was invited to do this as the British Council, who manage Comenius Projects in the UK on behalf of the European Union, have recognized the “excellent progress” of our project. This could not be achieved without the full co-operation and participation of staff, governors, PTA, our partner schools and of course, our pupils. Thank you all, it is wonderful to have our project acknowledged in this way and to know that a small school can take a lead in educational developments.

PTA NEWS:
Christmas Cards – The proof for your child’s personalised Christmas card is now ready and you will have received your proof and order form this week. The cards are £5 for a pack of 10. Orders must be made by 9th October as we have to do a bulk order for everyone at the same time within a very tight 10 day turnaround. Please ensure you return your order forms to school by this date as late orders cannot be accepted or will incur a significant charge to individual parents by the printing company. If anyone has not received their card proof please contact Charlotte Hector. Don’t forget to ask the grandparents if they would like some cards!

Clothes Recycling – the collection date has now been confirmed as Friday 20th November.

Music Quiz – tickets are selling well for the 16th October Quiz. Please buy your tickets that include a fish and chip supper from Mrs Hopkins at school.

Please bring any non-perishable Harvest gifts, eg dried pasta, tinned beans, tinned vegetables, soups, biscuits, chocolate, etc you may have to offer into school on the day. Mr Hudson will lead an assembly for Year 6 pupils and their parents and will be pleased to answer any questions that parents and pupils may have about moving up to secondary school.

Privacy Notice

In previous years in order to meet the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998, we needed to issue a Fair Processing Notice summarising the information held about pupils, why it is held, and the third parties to whom it may be passed on. The notice has been renamed and is now called a Privacy Notice and a copy is attached to this newsletter.

New French Book Available

Madame Brookes had a new book “Berthe Va au Supermarche” published last week. An order form is attached to this newsletter should anyone wish to purchase a copy (priced at £4.50).

Newsletter No 3 / 18th September 2009

After School Fun Club
The After School Fun Club would like to have a stall at the Christmas Bazaar in order to raise some extra funds to buy some new equipment specifically for the after school club. We would really appreciate any donations of suitable items for Christmas presents – have you any unwanted birthday or last year’s Christmas presents that you would be willing to recycle?
We would like to thank Mrs Lansley for kindly designing this fantastic logo specifically for us!

PTA Newsletter
Welcome back after a lovely summer break. I do hope you are all fighting fit and ready to join in the fund-raising for the School. We are a small but active group of fairly normal parents who volunteer their services to raise money to enable the school to have French lessons, pay for computers, maintain the swimming pool, have treats such as theatre group visits and other worthy causes.
We need your help throughout the year so be prepared to help at events, sell tickets and join in the social nights such as the forthcoming Music Quiz. This year, as we have lost a number of very active members, we will be directly approaching you to help run stalls at the Christmas Bazaar and to help out on the Bar.
All parents (including Dads!) are welcome to come along to the meetings. The next one will be held at Sara Wright’s house on Tuesday 13th October at 7.45pm with plenty of flowing wine to keep us all sane.

Christmas Cards – your child may have mentioned that this week they have been drawing Christmas Cards. You may think this is quite early however this year we have arranged for each child to have a unique Christmas Card drawn by them and sold as individual cards, i.e., only their picture showing, not the whole class. The timetable is very tight to ensure you are able to receive your personalised cards by the end of October/early November. Be prepared for a quick turnaround on your card approval and order; more information to follow.

Music Quiz – Friday 16th October. This popular Music Quiz will be held again in School. Arrive by 7pm with the quiz kick off at 7.30pm. Entrance fee is £2 with optional Fish & Chip supper at £4.50. The evening is great fun with everyone welcome (over 18s only). Why not get a team together and improve your chances of winning. Tickets can be purchased from Mrs Hopkins at School until Thursday 15th October.

Clothes Recycling – we are planning another clothes recycling in November – date to be confirmed.

Little Bears News
This week Little Bears have enjoyed picking apples from their tree and then making apple crumble, hand-painting and talking about our 5 senses. They have also made pictures of skeletons from straws. They would really appreciate donations of any suitable items for junk modelling.

Lost Property
Andrew Oakley has lost a school sweatshirt. It is named as either Andrew Oakley or Marc Oakley. Please could everyone check at home to see if it has inadvertently got into the wrong bag? Thank you.

Watlington Partnership Information Sheet
Each family should have received earlier this week a paper copy of the current extended services activities available currently within the Watlington Partnership of Schools.

Newsletter No 7 / 17th July 2009

Sports Day
It was wonderful to see so many people at our sports evening last Friday. Thank you to all the athletes, supporters, helpers and the PTA for making this event such a success. Even the weather was on our side this year! Here is a report from the joint captains (Cameron and Mair) of the winning team:
“At 6.30pm on the 10th July all pupils from Stadhampton School walked onto their running track ready to race to victory. After an hour of racing all the teams were exhausted and ready for an early night. But everyone managed to stay awake for the final score of a victory for the Green Team!”

Message from the PTA Committee
The Sports evening PTA BBQ & Bar was a huge success last week as we managed to raise a net amount of £422. Thank you to everyone who bought food and drink; the Pimms was very popular and will be a permanent fixture at future events.

The total amount of money raised this academic year is a healthy £3400 which although not as much as previous years (£5000) is a tremendous amount in the current economic climate. Thank you to everyone for your support during the year; you may be an active PTA member, a Chiltern Chase runner, a cake maker, or someone who buys tickets, donates sponsorship or gets involved in other ways. It is through our combined efforts that we are able to raise funds for the school to enable our children to have special treats such as a Daylight Theatre performance, use the school swimming pool, have computers, learn French and a whole host of other events. So THANK YOU!

Date for your calendar – Music Quiz with optional Fish & Chip supper Friday 16th October.

Message from the School Council
Thank you to everyone who took part in the Cartoon Competition. Ella from Class 1 came 1st, Oliver from Class 3 came 2nd and Ella-Mae from Class 2 came 3rd.
The Fun Run was a great success. There were some crazy costumes ranging from Superman to Santa. Despite the rain we made £61.50, Thank You!
Thank you to all members of the school council this year and to Mrs Sutton for giving up her time to help us.
We start the new school year with an opening fund of £216 which we can build on and then spend on new projects.

Daylight Theatre Performance
Many thanks to the PTA for financially supporting this event. Here is a report by Maisie and Annabel from Class 2:
“Today we had a play about King Arthur. It was very entertaining. The funniest and naughtiest character was Mordred – he fell into the well! There was also a bird and a goblin called Pebble. At the end everyone clapped for ages because it was so good! We got to ask the actors some questions and have a look at the set. The well wasn’t that deep after all! We hope they come back next year.”

“Design a Lunchbox” Competition

Thank you to all who took the time to enter our competition with some fantastic ideas for a healthy lunch. We are pleased to announce that the winners were: Jessica – Class 3, Ella-Mae – Class 2 and Cora – Class 1.

Learning Platform Update
We have loaded some photographs from Sports Evening and from the School Council Fun Run onto the Learning Platform which you may like to see.

Great Haseley and District Horticultural Society

You may like to know that this year the Great Haseley & District Horticultural Society are holding their Annual Show at Chislehampton House on Saturday 29th August. There is a children’s schedule and families should receive a programme of events, through school, this week. During this event our ‘stained glass’ window will be on display at St Katherine’s church, Chiselhampton. The images in our window are based on pupils’ interpretations of lines taken from John Betjeman’s poem “Verses Tuned”. Betjeman wrote the poem in support of St Katherine’s Church in 1952 and it has provided inspiration for our support of this local event.

Hello’s and Goodbye’s
We say a very sad farewell to Mrs Sutton, Mrs Wells and Mrs Thorpe who all leave Stadhampton School today along with our Year 6 pupils. We have enjoyed getting to know each and every one of you and send you all our very best wishes for the future.

Have a happy and safe summer!

We welcomed Nadia Howden and Imogen Collins into school this week. Nadia and Imogen are both Year 10 pupils at Icknield Community College and joined us for a week’s work experience.

Nit Alert!
A case of nits has been reported this week. Please be vigilant! It has been some time since we last had an outbreak but if everyone checks and treats (if necessary) their children’s hair (and their own!) this weekend, we should be able to deal with this problem very quickly. Nits and headlice can be very difficult to see. The most effective recommended treatment is to wash and condition the hair and comb through with a nit comb whilst the hair is still wet before the conditioner is rinsed out. Repeat at least 4 times over a 2-week period. Further details can be found at www.nhs.uk/Livewell/childhealth6-15/Pages/Nits.aspx

Message from the PTA Committee

A huge thank you to all those who raised sponsorship and donated for the Chiltern Chase Runners. £537 was the total raised for Stadhampton Primary School and £143 for Little Bears with Sarah Lowman winning the prize from ‘Up & Running’ for the most sponsorship money raised.

School Council

The School Council are holding a Fun Run on Tuesday 14th July (weather permitting). Children may run in fancy dress if they wish; clothes should be brought to school in a bag specifically for the run. There will be a minimum entry cost of £1. Money raised will help the School Council start next year with a healthy bank balance which will fund new resources that will benefit all pupils.

School End of Year Reports
End of Year reports for all pupils have been sent home this week. If you have not received a report please contact the School Office. If any parent feels that they would like an opportunity to discuss the report in more detail, please complete the reply slip at the end of the report and return it to your child’s class teacher.

Basketball Fundraising Event
Following the recent basketball fundraising event led by Premier Sports, we are pleased to report that the school raised £240 from this event which will be spent on improving outdoor play equipment.

Sainsburys and Tesco Vouchers
Thank you again to everyone collecting these vouchers for us. The Tesco order has now been dispatched and the Sainsbury order will be finalised shortly, so please send in any further vouchers for the Sainsbury scheme on Monday.

After-school Sports Clubs
All After-school Sports Clubs finished this week apart from Premier Sports football which is taking place on Thursday 16th July.

Visit to Harris Manchester College
Thank you to those of you who were able to join us for this wonderful event. It was a truly inspirational venue and the acoustics were magnificent. We were treated to a selection of musical pieces linked to the Comenius Project played by Myles Hartley, Director of Music for the College, and piano pieces played by a number of our pupils. Recorder groups played beautifully and our singing almost raised the roof! Many thanks to Mrs Drake and Mrs Lawson for their support in arrangements for this event. One of our young pianists has written their own report:

Report by Lucy Banting: “On Tuesday 7th July, Classes 2 and 3 went to Harris Manchester College in Oxford. We sang, played the recorder and some played the piano. Mr Hartley, Director of Music, played some Holst on the organ and the Head Steward, David Woodfine, showed us the refectory/dinner hall. Mrs Lawson showed us the library. We had to spot a skeleton called Bob! Being there was a brilliant experience for us and I wish I could go there again!”

To ease pressure on limited parking please walk to school this evening if you can. The netball court area will be available to park in as well as the school car park. Please be considerate to residents of Cratlands Close if you do park in the road. Thank you.

School Term and Holiday Dates for 2009-10
Please find attached to this newsletter a copy of our school term and holiday dates for the academic year beginning on Thursday 3rd September 2009.

The Thames Valley Policing Pledge
Each family should have received a copy of the above pledge via school earlier this week.

Reports from pupils following class visits to Beale Park and the Reading Museum
Report by Ella:
“It was great at Beale Park. When we got off the coach we had our fruit break. Next we went to see the animals. The first animal was a kookaburra. I liked the kookaburra. Next we saw a lima and everyone laughed. Then we went to find a spot to eat lunch. Later on we saw the rabbits in the Pet’s Corner, and then we saw the deer and the goats and even fed them! We then went to the park for a long time and then went back to school.”

Report by Ella Mae and Rhiannon: “On Tuesday 30th June Class 2 went to the Reading Museum complete with gas mask boxes and labels. Before our lesson we saw a real gas mask, a real gas mask box, a maths textbook, and World War II coins. In our lesson we used a slate to write numbers one to ten. When we were about to use the ink pens the air raid siren went, so we had to go under the desks. Then we got out and started to write a letter to our mum’s in an ink pen. We also found out the value of the money at that time. The last thing we found out was that the teachers were strict (unlike teachers today!)”

Class 3 swimming session on 6th July
Class 3 pupils in Mrs Selwood’s swimming group are reminded to take pyjamas (or old long sleeve T-shirt and tracksuit trousers) as well as their normal swimming kit for this session.

The Oxfordshire Big Science Event Final
On Wednesday our four young finalists, Mair, Daniel, Peter and Oliver, presented their investigation “Do girls have better memories than boys?” to other finalists and their teachers, judges from Science Oxford and Local Authority Science Advisors. Over 4000 pupils in the county entered and we were thrilled to be selected to be one of the twelve schools to reach the final. This is an achievement in itself but I will let the finalists themselves give their own report of the final result.

Report from Mair, Daniel, Peter and Oliver: “On Wednesday 1st July, Mair, Daniel, Peter and Oliver went to Science Oxford for the final of the “Big Science Event”. We were the first team in our group to pitch our idea to the judges. It was a great day, with a visit to the Discovery Zone and a brilliant science show. We came second out of all the hundreds of entries in Oxfordshire! Thank you to Mrs Turner and Mrs Wilkin for transporting us”.

Daylight Theatre Performance
A reminder that parents are invited to come along to watch the performance by the Daylight Theatre group and some of our pupils on Tuesday 14th July at 2pm in the school hall. There will be an admission charge of £1 for this performance which will help offset the costs of the day. Unfortunately pre-school children cannot be included in the audience on this occasion.

Message from the PTA Committee
Sports Night BBQ – Next Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday will be your LAST chance to buy tickets. Reminder that there will be a BBQ & bar run by PTA at the Sports Evening. The bar will sell Pimms, beer, wine, crisps and soft drinks. Sausages & burgers can be pre-ordered for the BBQ at £2 each. Tickets are available from PTA members or Mrs Hopkins at school until Wednesday 8th July. Tickets must be purchased in advance as there will be no cash sales of food on the night.

Sports Evening on Friday 10th July
Sports Evening is scheduled (weather permitting!) for Friday 10th July. We hope that this will be a fun evening with races for the pupils and with refreshments and a BBQ for parents, pupils, friends, etc.

• We will need to know if any pupils cannot attend so that the races, especially the final relay, can be organised.
• The bar will be open from 6.15pm. Please remember to buy BBQ food tickets early next week.
• The races start promptly at 6.30pm and we expect the final relay race to be completed by 7.30pm.
• We ask that pupils arrive at school at 6.15pm and that they bring a bottle of water/squash to keep with them.
• Pupils are put into one of three colour teams and if possible they should wear a T-shirt of the appropriate colour. There is no need to buy a T-shirt if you don’t have the right colour, as we can provide sports bibs and bands.
• Parents are welcome to bring their own folding chairs or picnic rug to sit on.
• The end of the track will be roped off for safety reasons.
• The climbing frame is out of bounds for safety reasons.
• Please ask older siblings to be respectful of the races and not play ball games whilst the races are on.

Recorders and PE Kit Reminders!

Please could all pupils in Years 3-6 have their recorders in school on both Monday and Tuesday next week; we will have our regular recorder lesson on Monday 6th and then be playing in our concert at HMC on Tuesday 7th. In the interests of personal hygiene all pupils should provide their own recorder.

Please could all pupils have their PE kit in school every day next week so that we can take full advantage of suitable weather opportunities to practice for Sports Day – these may not necessarily be when pupils are normally timetabled to do PE.

Little Bears News
This week Little Bears enjoyed making scones and have continued with their focus on the seaside. Pupils have also been trying to keep cool in the very hot weather. Unfortunately both “Race Night” and “Race Afternoon” had to be cancelled last weekend.

Newsletter No 4 / 26th June 2009

Congratulations to:

Kezia Lawson for coming 2nd in the recent Oxfordshire ICT News Reporter Competition;

Mair Amery, Daniel Green, Peter Roe, Oliver Perring, Kezia Lawson, Aimee Parkes, Rory Pattisson and Lucy Banting who have come first and second in their respective groups in the first stage of judging of the “Oxfordshire Big Science Event” out of 6 schools. The group whose entry will go through to the county final is Mair, Daniel, Peter and Oliver. Final judging takes place on 1st July at Science Oxford. Good luck!

Alex Birtles and Robbie Scragg who were the winners of the Watlington and Icknield Tennis Tournament 2009, earlier this week.

Learning Platform

We have been advised by the ICT Team at Cricket Road that parent data views have been turned off due to an intermittent countywide problem. The LEA is currently working on this fault and will let us know when the problem has been resolved.

After School Club Update
We are pleased that the After School Club will continue following the trial over the last two terms and will be available to parents on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons starting from Monday September 7th from 3.15pm to 5.00pm. It will continue to be run by Nikki Howlett with help from Joy Hopkins.

The club is non profit making, and whilst it lost £107 in the start up phase we are almost at breakeven. In order to make the club sustainable we need to make a small change; from the 1st September 2009 the price will stay at £5 per session when sessions are paid for in advance at the beginning of the week. Paying on the day will cost slightly more, at £6 per session. This will help the club to plan, and we hope that by encouraging parents to take advantage of the cheaper rate by paying in advance that we can achieve the average of 9 pupils per day to allow us to break even. The club is also currently being registered for Busy Bee vouchers, which offer savings to some parents: http://www.busybeesvouchers.com/ The school is responding to the needs of parents by facilitating a valuable support setting where children can play amongst friends in a familiar environment. If you have any questions or would like to try it out please contact either Nikki Howlett or Joy Hopkins.

Watlington Partnership
Earlier this week we sent a paper copy of the Summer Activity Sheet for the Watlington Partnership of Schools to each family.

Message from the PTA Committee
Sports Night BBQ – There will be a BBQ & bar run by PTA at the Sports Evening. The bar will sell Pimms, bottled beers, wine, crisps and soft drinks. Sausages & burgers can be pre-ordered from the BBQ at £2 each. Tickets are available from PTA members or Mrs Hopkins at school from Monday 22nd June until Wednesday 8th July. Tickets must be purchased in advance as there will be no cash sales of food on the night.

Chiltern Chase – final chance to bring in any sponsorship money for the Chiltern Chase on Monday please.

Sainsbury and Tesco Vouchers

Many thanks to everyone for collecting these vouchers for us. They really do make a difference, enabling us to improve resources. Please could any further vouchers be sent in on Monday so that we can complete our count and dispatch our order.

Premier Sports Basketball Event
Thank you to everyone for sending in the sponsorship money collected for this fundraising event. We are pleased to announce that the school raised £220 from this event, which will be used to purchase some new outdoor play equipment for breaktimes.

The Big Lunch
Although not a school function, you may like to know about The Big Lunch which is a nationwide campaign to get neighbours to meet. The idea is to have a “Big Lunch” on Stadhampton Green – the perfect venue: playground, shade under a big oak tree, mown grass and hopefully sunshine! All you have to do is bring a rug and a picnic. Other ideas are suggested on the website (http://www.thebiglunch.com) but the main aim is to encourage villagers to turn up and share a lunch-time. No fundraising, no pressure, just fun!

Little Bears News
This week Little Bears have enjoyed making gingerbread shapes and also spending time outdoors playing with water, doing chalking and playing games with our new parachute. We have also been talking about the seaside. We said a sad goodbye to Helen Buckley who has now completed her work placement with us. Race Night has been cancelled due to lack of ticket sales; however, a “Race Afternoon” is planned for this Saturday beginning at 12 noon. Everyone is most welcome to come along.

Appointment of a new teacher for Class 3
Following a full day of interviews earlier this week, the Governing Body are pleased to announce the appointment of Miss Hema Shah as the new teacher for Class 3 from 1st September 2009. Miss Shah is currently teaching at a school on the outskirts of London and demonstrated through a teaching activity, a formal interview and a written exercise that she has the skills and qualities that the Governing Body was looking for. We are hoping to facilitate Miss Shah being released by her current school so that she can spend a day in school before the summer break.

“Healthy Week”
We have had a very active week! During this week we have participated in Skip-Hop workshops, an athletics tournament (the results of which are entered in the Intra School Athletics Competition for South Oxfordshire), talks on healthy food, a sponsored basketball skills event (organised by Premier Sports) and pupils have been challenged to design a healthy lunchbox. Here are some reports of the events:

Skip Hop Visit – report by Isobel Mathews and Alex Birtles:
On Tuesday 16th June, we had a visit from one of the leaders from Skip Hop, a company that helps children learn how to skip and learn new skills for skipping. After he had taught us how to skip, and taught us some new skills, we had a show. Aidan chose the best person for each new skill and the people he chose did the skill in front of the whole school and the adults that had time to come and watch. Skipping ropes were available for children to buy. It was really good fun.

Premier Sports Sponsored Basketball Event – report by Peter Roe and Jordan Lafford:
Last Friday all the children took a sponsor form home to fill in, then everyone had a week to fill it in and bring it back to school on Thursday. During the event a Premier Sports coach came in and taught us 5 different skills for basketball. We all had lots of fun and we have learnt how to play basketball.

Thank you to all the families who have supported this event. We shall be able to tell you the total amount raised next week. Pupils who have returned their sponsorship forms have had them signed by the Premier Sports coach and will receive a certificate. Any mislaid/forgotten forms can still be brought into school for signature next Thursday - however we should remind you that all sponsorship money should be brought in by Thursday 25th June.
Thank you in anticipation!

Little Bears News
As part of our “Healthy Week”, Little Bears have enjoyed making a pasta salad. They have also enjoyed doing some bubble paintings. A very successful Sports Day was held last Saturday which raised £135 and Little Bears pupils will help to choose the new outside pay equipment which this is spent on. Tickets are on sale for Race Night on 27th June and then a Strawberry Fayre is planned for 15th July. More details to follow.

Message from the PTA Committee
Chiltern Chase – it was muddy underfoot and a little wet but the sun came out just in time for a lovely run through the stunning countryside around Ewelme. A huge well done and thank you to the following Stadhampton Steamers who did a magnificent job of completing either the 5k or 10k race:
Sara & Nige Wright, Sarah Lawson & Riaz Khimji, Kathryn & John Turner, Marc Oakley, Nathan Manzie, Anna McGauran, Keith & Galina Browning, Julie Pattisson, Rachel Mannering, Jane Birchenough, Sarah Lowman, Bev Woodford, Simon Cannings, Lucy & Dave Ellis, Jonathan Pratt.
Please send in your sponsorship money in recognition of this great achievement to Mrs Hopkins or sponsor a Steamer direct. There will be a prize donated by ‘Up & Running’ for the Stadhampton Steamer who raises the most amount of sponsorship. Get your training shoes on for next year...

Africa Week
Cameron Vale Report: Jonathan’s Jungle Roadshow came to Stadhampton School to show us all the African animals in his collection. We were allowed to touch some of the animals and saw a Rainbow Stag Beetle, a Ruby Mexican Red Knee Tarantula, a Boa Constrictor and a Kenyan Sand Snake. The Sand Snake had shed it’s skin two days ago and so was at his brightest colour.

Jordan Lafford Report: We had great fun learning to dance a Tribal Warrior dance. We all enjoyed the experience of dancing with an expert dancer.

Thank you also to Mrs Amery and Ms Moeran who also came in to talk to pupils about their African experiences.

Partnership “Kwik Cricket” Tournament on 10th June
It was a pleasure to accompany our cricket team to this annual event and I was very proud of their achievements. Many thanks to the parents who helped with transport and supported our team.
Here is a tournament report by Aimee Parkes and Jessica Tombling:

On Wednesday 10th June, 10 eager cricketers went to Ewelme School for the tournament. We played 4 matches and won our group. The final was against Watlington Primary Group A which we lost 213 to 228. Overall we were the runners up! Everyone really enjoyed playing cricket, some people hit sixes and fours! Thank you to Mrs Amery, Mr Pattisson, Mr Birtles, Mrs Vale and Mrs Turner for taking us and supporting us.

Newsletter No 1 / 5th June 2009

Happy JUNE Birthday to: Megan Barber, Olivia Dallimore, Betsy Elliott, Chloe Hindmarch, Joshua Matthews and Georgia Valentine.

During June we are focusing on the core value of HONESTY

After School Club
There are still places available at the after school club held in the portacabin until 5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please contact Nikki Howlett to obtain a form for this, if you do not have one already.

Swimming in the School Pool
As Mr Pattisson has kindly prepared the school pool for use and it has passed the bacteriological tests carried out by SMS Environmental, pupils should all make sure that they have swimming kit available in school each day. This should consist of a one-piece swimming costume for girls, swimming trunks for boys (not baggy please), a swimming hat (for all pool users), and a towel. Pupils who have stud earrings which cannot be removed by the pupil themselves, must have their own supply of tape available which they must use to cover over the earrings in order to comply with health and safety requirements.

Learning Platform

Each family should have received earlier this week details of parents’ usernames and passwords in order to access the Interest Space for Parents on the Learning Platform. Please let Mrs Hopkins know if you experience difficulties in accessing this area of the LP or if you are unable to see information relating to your child.

Message from the PTA Committee
The Stadhampton Steamers will be running this Sunday in the Chiltern Chase to raise money for the school. If you are not running please instead sponsor the team and come along to support us on the day. Sponsorship money may be given until 29th June; please leave with Mrs Hopkins at school in an envelope explaining what the money is for.
For those who are running there will be a prize donated by ‘Up & Running’ in Headington for the person who collects the most sponsorship. Good luck everyone and see you on Sunday.

School “Themed Weeks” during June
We are very pleased to have arranged two ‘themed weeks’ in June which we are all looking forward to:

‘Focus on Africa’ Week – 8th – 12th June 2009
During this week we have some exciting events planned and welcome several parents into school to share a personal insight into aspects of life in Africa. These events include a dance workshop, African Art activities, a selection of African animals visiting with their carer, a taste of African Food – courtesy of Food with Thought, and talks on Uganda & Ghana as well as the work of Christian Aid in Africa. On Friday 12th June we will have a non-uniform day, requesting a voluntary contribution of £1 per pupil, to support the work of Christian Aid. We hope some pupils may be sufficiently inspired to wear an African outfit!

“Healthy Week” – 15th – 19th June 2009
As part of our commitment to the Healthy Schools initiative we have also organised a Healthy Week with a range of activities and events for all pupils. These include an athletics tournament, a “Skip-Hop” workshop where we shall be joined by a sports specialist to help us develop a range of skipping skills (and improve our fitness!), a talk on “Rainbow Food” and the importance of a balanced diet, opportunities to prepare (and eat!) a healthy snack, a Premier Sports led basketball based fundraising event and a design a healthy lunchbox competition.

The “Skip-Hop” session includes a whole-school demonstration at 2.30pm on Tuesday 16th June to which parents are invited. The “Skip-Hop” coach will have a supply of “Skip-Hop” skipping ropes available for sale (at £3.50 each) at the end of the day. There is no obligation to buy and we are not specifically promoting them but we are advised that they are popular at other schools and enable pupils to perform certain “tricks” that are not possible with an ordinary handle-less skipping rope.

The Premier Sports basketball fundraising event will be held during the morning of Thursday 18th June. This is a sponsored event in which all pupils will take part in a class basketball session, led by a specialist coach, and will learn and develop five new skills. Pupils are invited to seek sponsorship for this event and further details are given on a sponsorship form which will be sent home on Friday. Please note that these forms must be brought in to school on Thursday 18th June in order for the coach to complete and sign. Funds raised from this event will be channeled into developing playtime equipment facilities, some of which our pupils have suggested. Thank you.

Sunhats and Sunscreen
Pupils are reminded to bring in and wear sunhats during the sunny weather. Sunscreen is best applied before school but pupils may re-apply their own sunscreen, under supervision, just before lunch, if necessary. Sunscreen containers should be named and left with the class teacher. Unfortunately we are not allowed to assist with the application of sunscreen.

School Council
On Monday 15th June, the School Council will be selling cartoon templates on which to create a cartoon about the summer holidays. It will be a competition with 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes for each class. It will cost 50p to enter. Closing date for entries is Monday 6th July.

Planned Comenius visit to Hazlach, Poland for older pupils and their parents, April 2010
All pupils currently in Years 4 and 5 should have received a letter about this visit earlier this week. Thank you for all the responses so far. If you have not received this letter please contact Mrs Turner.

Little Bears News
This week Little Bears enjoyed making sandwiches and spending a lot of time outdoors in the lovely sunshine. Nikki has started an Early Language Lead Practioners training course this week which has entitled Little Bears to receive some lovely new resources to do with language, e.g. story sack, voice recorder, listening games, etc. We are fortunate that Nikki is able to undertake this training as there are only 20 settings in Oxfordshire who are able to take up this opportunity.
Race Night tickets for the 27th June are now available, priced at £12.50 including supper.

Cycle Training
Cycle training will begin for all Year 6 pupils who have not already completed it on Tuesday 2nd June. Many thanks to our volunteer parent trainers, Mrs Leighfield, Mrs Scragg and Mrs Vale for giving up their time to facilitate this opportunity.

Learning Platform
This is the final week for sending paper copies of the newsletter to those families who are able to receive it electronically. We are pleased that 40 out of our 49 families in school have now sent in their e-mail details. We would still be very pleased to receive e-mail addresses from parents who have not provided one already, in order to further increase the percentage of newsletters and other correspondence which can be sent electronically.

Artsmark Award
We have recently received notification that our Artsmark award has been revalidated for another three years. This is the recognition of the commitment we have to the arts and reflects the high standard of artwork created by pupils throughout the school. Well done to everyone and many thanks to Mrs Sutton who co-ordinated and compiled our application.

Events in Term 6
During Term 6 we have a number of exciting events planned. These include two themed weeks in June:
• “Focus on Africa” 8th-12th June, during which we will welcome several visitors into school, including Jonathan’s Jungle Roadshow which will provide a professional “animal encounter” workshop for all pupils. Many thanks to the PTA for helping to financially support this event.
• “Healthy Week” 15th – 19th June, during which we will have a number of professionally lead events to inspire us all to be active and lead healthy lifestyles. PE kit should be kept in school every day that week!

Easy2name labels
We have been asked to remind parents of the opportunity to order packs of labels which can be stuck onto clothing without a need for sewing or ironing, along with the additional benefit of earning funds for Stadhampton School. Simply go to the website www.easy2name.com and use the code Stadhampton Primary School OX44 when placing an order.
