Newsletter No 10 / 26th March

As next week is a shorter week than usual, it is envisaged that this will be the final newsletter of Term 4.

Sport Relief
Thank you all for your generous support of the School Council Fun Run which took place last week. Between us all, (pupils and staff!) we managed to run/walk a total of 163 miles! We were very pleased to collect £111 for Sports Relief.
Here is a report from the School Council:
On the 19th March the whole-school ran a certain number of laps around the school field for Sports Relief. Everyone did at least one mile including the Foundation Stage. We would like to thank everyone for all the money you’ve given, it makes a huge difference. So we would like to say a big, big THANK YOU!

Paying for School Meals

As all Primary Schools in Oxfordshire change their finance system to SAP on 1st April, there is a requirement for parents paying for school meals by cheque, from the 1st April, to make sure that cheques are made payable to “Oxfordshire County Council” and that they write “Stadhampton Primary School” on the back of the cheque, please.
Also, although the vast majority of parents do follow our regular reminders via the newsletter to pay for school meals on MONDAY MORNING, there are still a significant number of parents who have not yet consistently got into this habit! The organisation of school meals and banking of the monies collected is a time-consuming task and we do appreciate parents’ co-operation in this matter in order to keep the time involved to a minimum.

The change-over to SAP may also affect school trips/after school clubs,/swimming contributions to transport costs, etc which some parents pay for by cheque. We will endeavour to make it very clear on any such letter whether cheques would need to be made payable to Oxfordshire County Council or Stadhampton Primary School.
Thank you.

Swimming at Berinsfield
Class 2 pupils will begin a series of five swimming sessions on Monday 19th April. The other swimming sessions will be on 26th April, 10th May, 17th May and 24th May. As always, we appreciate a “voluntary contribution” of £1 per child, per swimming session, and for parents choosing to pay this cost by cheque, it would be £5 made payable to Stadhampton Primary School, please.

Class 2 Visit to Northmoor Trust – Report by Ella Mae White
Last Tuesday, Class 2 went to a Saxon day at the Northmoor Trust. We looked at a time spiral from about half a billion years ago to the present. Then we went to look at some pictures about what the Northmoor Trust would have looked like in Saxon and Viking times. Next we went to Castle Hill, which is one of two hills, and looked at a ditch dug out of the hill. We were told that it was for protection and then we ran down it! Later, we did some wattle weaving in the arboretum.

Class 3 Visit to Northmoor Trust – Report by Conall Fernie and Issy Matthews
On 16th March Class 3 went on a school trip to the Northmoor Trust in Little Wittenham. We did several activities based on teamwork. This included a lot of walking up and down hills and an accident or two along the way! Then we went off to do some den-making which we all found great fun. Next we played a game called “camouflage” where you have to find a hiding place in 5 seconds. We have tried to play this in our school field but there are not so many hiding places! The final game was a hiding game where we got into groups and hid one of the people in the group. Then the other group had to try and find them. We all loved this school trip and would really like to go again!

Mrs Wells’ Bench’
When Mrs Wells retired from school last summer she had plans to have a bench made for pupils and staff to sit on in the school grounds. This week a wonderful oak bench made by Mrs Wells’ brother arrived and has already become very popular with the children! We would all like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Mrs Wells and we look forward to seeing her sitting on the bench too!

Newsletter No 8 / 12th March 2010

Book Fair
Thank you to everyone who bought books from the Book Fair which we had in school recently in conjunction with World Book Day. Although the Book Fair was very small, with only two cases of books, we sold books to the value of £150 (excluding WBD vouchers) which resulted in £150 worth of commission, taken in books for school pupils.

World Book Day, Friday 5th March
Many thanks to all the children (and staff!) who entered into the spirit of the day so enthusiastically and to all the parents who enabled this to happen! There were some very imaginative costumes for a wide range of book characters (ranging from Little Red Riding Hood to Horrid Henry!) and each “character” read an extract from their chosen book to the rest of their class. Other activities were carried out in each class, including character “hot seating”, creating character profiles and developing new stories involving curious character combinations. All pupils designed a bookmark and a selection of the best designs have been entered in a national “Design a Bookmark” competition linking with World Book Day.

Work Viewing Evening, Monday 15th March

A reminder that parents are invited to view their children’s work, in each class, between 3.30 and 6pm on Monday 15th March. Teaching staff will be available in the classroom for brief consultation, if required, but there is no appointment system on this occasion. In addition, several of our school governors will be serving tea/ coffee/squash in the Hall, enabling parents to meet them informally. The governors will also be providing parents with an opportunity to make suggestions which may shape the future of Stadhampton School. The governors will have a “suggestion box” in which parents are invited to post their responses to the question “How would you like the school to look in 3 years time?” Cards will be provided for parents to complete. Suggestions will be discussed at the next Governors’ Meeting with a view to being part of a wider consultation process.

PTA NEWS

Nit Alert
Thank you to a parent in Class 2 for letting us know that she has treated her child for head lice this week. In order to eradicate this problem quickly, please could all parents check, and treat their children’s hair this weekend if necessary.

Sports Relief Fun Run, Friday 19th March
The School Council, along with Miss Shah and Mrs Manzie, are planning to hold a Fun Run in support of Sports Relief on Friday 19th March (weather permitting!). This will take the same format as similar fun runs held in school over recent years. The run will take place entirely within the school grounds and will comprise of a number of circuits of our sports field. Mrs Manzie has measured the route and each “lap” of the grounds is half a mile! Pupils in Reception and Class 1 will be challenged to 2 circuits (1 mile), pupils in Class 2, 4 laps (2 miles) and pupils in Class 3, 6 laps (3 miles). We hope that everyone will complete a minimum of 1 mile – we aim to complete at least 100 miles between us all and will keep a “running” total. A minimum donation of 50p would be appreciated – this could be extended to 50p per lap for those who complete additional laps. Please bring donations in on the day. Pupils can wear school PE kit, or a Sports Relief T-shirt, or dress up as an Olympic athlete, just for the run. However pupils will need trainers whatever clothing is worn!
We appreciate that some pupils will need to walk some of the course and this is not a problem. We hope that all pupils will participate but please let your child’s teacher know if your child will not be taking part. Thank you.

Daffodils
We would like to say “thank you” to Mr and Mrs Birtles for very kindly donating, again this year, a bunch of daffodils for each child for Mother’s Day.

Stadhampton are yet again taking part in the British Land UK Chess Challenge! Every Tuesday lunchtime 27 children from Years 2 to Year 6 are competing in tournaments against each other at Chess Club, run by Miss Shah. Reverend David has also been assisting at these sessions. Dance and Gym Festival at ICC – Report by Amy Akers
On Friday 26th February Class 3 went to Icknield Community College for our Partnership Dance Festival. There were lots of dances and schools, including Chalgrove, RAF Benson, Lewknor and more. Our dance was a Turkish dance. The other dances were mostly pop dances and we showed everyone in the large school hall. We enjoyed the dance festival which included an extra dance lesson for us given by some of the Icknield students.

Mid-Year Summary Reports and Work Viewing Evening
Every child should have brought home their Mid-Year Summary Report today. This single-page report provides information about pupil progress towards key targets for their year group. This report is shortly followed by our Work Viewing Evening from 3.30 to 6.00pm on Monday 15th March. This provides parents with an opportunity to look at their child/ren’s work, with or without child/ren. Although there is no appointment system, teachers will be available in their classrooms for parents to consult with, briefly.

Tag Rugby Coaching

We are very pleased to welcome Mr Andy Highton, a R.F.U rugby coach into school this term. He is providing tag rugby coaching for pupils in Classes 2 and 3 on Friday afternoons until the Easter Holidays. Please ensure all pupils in Classes 2 and 3 have their outdoor PE Kit in school on Fridays.

Premier Sports Coach
We also welcome Mr Leo Brooks, our new Premier Sports Coach, who will be working with all pupils in Years 1 – 6 on Thursday afternoons.

Marie Curie Cancer Care – Great Daffodil Appeal

The annual Marie Curie Cancer Care Great Daffodil Appeal takes place again during March. Once again we are pleased to support this appeal by displaying a box of buttonhole daffodils in the hall. Daffodils are available, for a donation, and these donations will help Marie Curie Cancer Care to provide a nurse to care for someone with terminal cancer locally. Thank you.

Little Bears News
The Little Bears enjoyed another assembly with FS1 & Class 1 on Monday. To support our “Spring Baby Animals” theme this week, the children have produced some wonderful craft, particularly the lambs. It's as if our Little Bears have transformed into lambs this week skipping around the garden in the beautiful sunshine! The staff at Little Bears would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Burnell (Beau's dad) for taking time out of his extremely busy schedule to do some repairs in our garden. We are very grateful for the fantastic work he has done.
