James Carter – Poet in Residence
All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the time poet James Carter spent in school on Wednesday. He took Key Stage assemblies, worked with each class and lead an after school fun family workshop. It was lovely that so many of you were able to join in with the family workshop, we hope you enjoyed the event. We are fortunate that James will return to school to work with pupils and staff next Wednesday and although there will not be another family workshop session, there will be a pupil poetry presentation to parents at the end of the school day. If you would like to come to this please arrive at the front door at 2.45pm. The presentation will be finished before the end of the school day.

Children in Need
Stadhampton School and Little Bears Pre-School collectively raised the magnificent sum of £189.22 for Children in Need. Thank you to all who contributed to a truly dotty day!

Swimming Gala – Report by Lucy Banting
On 12th November 6 pupils from Stadhampton School swam in the Partnership Swimming Gala: Lucy, Issy, Alex, Benedict, Robbie and Florence. We all swam our best until the results were called out. It turned out that we had drawn with Watlington and so we had a swim-off. This was a relay and two people did back-stroke, two breaststroke and two front-crawl. But finally we beat them; we had won the trophy for 3 years running; it was victory again for Stadhampton!

Miss Heather Mould

We are pleased to announce that we have recruited a teacher for our new Foundation Stage class which starts in January 2010. Miss Heather Mould has been teaching Foundation Stage children in Bicester for the last year. She will join us for the day on Friday 4th December and meet our new Foundation Stage pupils and their parents.

James Carter, Poet-in residence, 25th November and 2nd December 2009
We are delighted to have James Carter, a local poet, in school on both Wednesday 25th November and Wednesday 2nd December. He will be reading his poetry to us and leading poetry workshops in all classes. On Wednesday 25th November he is running a Fun Family Poetry Workshop in the hall from 3.15 to 4.15pm. This is a one-off free opportunity, financed by Extended Services for pupils and parents to participate in this fun event. Please be reminded that pupils must be accompanied by an adult. There will be no after school sports clubs that day but pupils attending our after-school fun club will participate in the event with Mrs Howlett and Mrs Hopkins. On Wednesday 2nd December there will be a pupil poetry presentation to parents for approximately 20 minutes at 2.50pm. All welcome! You may like to access James Carter’s website www.jamescarterpoet.co.uk

Little Bears News

This week Little Bears have enjoyed making spaceships out of tissue paper, spaceships with 5 little aliens in (from the song Five Little Men in a Flying Saucer) and paper planets. They also had fun icing biscuits and making mince pies.

Christmas Production

This year the school’s Christmas production is “Through the Wardrobe”. There will be the following performances:
1. Dress Rehearsal on Tuesday 8th December at 10am. This performance is aimed at parents who would like to bring along pre-school aged children to see the play. Little Bears Pre-School pupils will come across to see this performance.
2. Matinee Performance on Tuesday 8th December at 2pm. This performance is open to villagers,
grandparents, parents and other relatives. No limits on numbers, but no pre-school aged children please. There will be a bucket collection for Oxfam Unwrapped with a suggested donation of £1 per person.
3. Evening Performance on Wednesday 9th December at 6.30pm. Entrance to this performance is by ticket only which must be bought in advance. Tickets cost £2 each and will be limited to 2 per family in the first instance. No pre-school aged children at this performance please. Tickets (2 per family) will be available from the school office from Monday 23rd November until Friday 4th December. If there are any surplus tickets available, not already taken up by parents by the end of school on Friday 4th December, they will be made available from Monday 7th December. Proceeds from ticket sales will be used to help improve the school’s drama resources, although the Oxfam Unwrapped bucket will be available on the evening should anyone wish to make a donation to this.

Whole-School Christmas Lunch
We hope that all pupils will be able to take part in a whole school special Christmas Lunch on Thursday 17th December. A flyer will be sent home today with details of the menu. Book Fair from 17th - 20th November 2009
A reminder that there will be a Book Fair from Tuesday 17th November to Friday 20th November. On Tuesday, from 3.30pm Parent’s Evening appointments will be held in the school hall, so for that afternoon only the Book Fair will be open in the school end of the portacabin from 3.15pm to 4.30pm. Please come along and see it over there.

Swine Flu

We currently have two pupils absent from school who are being treated for suspected swine flu. We feel that it is important to keep parents up to date with this information so that if your child is feeling very unwell and is showing symptoms that could be swine flu, you can let your GP know that there are other suspected cases in the school.

Payment for School Meals
We would like to remind parents that payment for school meals is due on Monday morning for any meal requirements in that week. Many Class 1 pupils (and a few older pupils!) seem not to be aware that they have payment for their school meals in their book bag and we are finding it quite disruptive to lessons to have to ask several pupils to go and check their book bags for any dinner money. If you think your child will not remember that there is payment in a book bag, please could you either remind them just as they are coming to school or give it directly to the class teacher yourself or to Mrs Hopkins in the school office. We would be very grateful for your help in this matter, thank you.

Children in Need – Friday 20th November
We will be helping to raise funds for Children in Need on Friday 20th November. Children are invited to wear ‘non-uniform’ clothes that day but are asked to wear ‘something spotty’ (it can be an official Pudsey bandana, but it doesn’t have to be) for a donation of £1. There will also be a sale of “bear biscuits” at 3pm in the Hall. This sale is also open to families from Little Bears. Shirley Bateman has kindly made a number of Pudsey biscuits which will be available for 50p each. In addition school pupils will have made and decorated their own Pudsey biscuits during the week and they will be given an opportunity at 3pm to buy the biscuit that they have made for 50p. Any surplus Pudsey biscuits will also be available for purchase. All proceeds from Non-Uniform Day and the sale of biscuits will go to Children in Need.

PTA Attachment “The Christmas Bazaar is nearly upon us!”

‘Notes of Harmony’ Comenius Project Developments (Turkey focus)
Turkish Day of Dance:
On Tuesday 10th November we welcomed Katrina Sapno, a professional dancer and dance instructor with West End experience, into school. Katrina led Turkish dance workshops with each class and the session culminated in a presentation to (and with!) parents at the end of the day. This enjoyable event was made possible through careful management of our Comenius Project budget.

Project Meeting in Izmir, Turkey, 4th-8th November 2009:
As mentioned last week Mrs Garrard and I recently attended the project meeting hosted by our partner school in Izmir, Turkey. This meeting was also attended by teachers from our other partner schools in Poland and Germany, enabling us to share the same experiences. During the meeting we received a tour of our partner school, attended lessons, watched a concert given by the pupils and participated in a joint meeting exchanging information and materials relating to project developments so far in each country and planning future developments. We also visited another, even bigger, school to see a contrasting range of facilities – particularly musical opportunities for pupils. We attended meetings with local dignitaries, particularly the Director of Education in Izmir and the District Governor. In addition we visited a number of places of local and national importance, including Ataturk’s summer home, the site of the House of The Virgin Mary, the ancient city of Ephesus, several museums and a mosque. We experienced a number of traditional customs including tea-drinking the Turkish way and street entertainment in the local bazaar, as well as more contemporary customs such as attending a Mozart and Tchaikovsky concert played by the Turkish symphony orchestra and swimming in the Aegean Sea! Our hosts were extremely thoughtful and welcoming and this meeting was a truly enriching experience for all involved, strengthening the links between our school communities.

Partnership Netball Tournament 2009
Congratulations to our netball team (all Y6 pupils) who won this tournament for the second year running. Thank you to Mrs Scragg, Mrs Perring, Mr Pattisson, Mrs Birtles and Mrs Roe for transporting the team. Here is a report by Peter Roe:
“We are pleased to report that the Year 6’s at Stadhampton School won the Hi-Five Netball Tournament. We won by 2 clear points by beating RAF Benson Team 1 and Team 2, Lewknor School and drawing with Watlington Primary. Thank you to Mrs Scragg and Mrs Manzie for organising this for us and to the parents who helped with the transport”.

Little Bears News
This week Little Bears have been talking about “Space” and have particularly enjoyed reading the book “Aliens love Underpants”. They have been painting pictures of aliens, painting patterns onto pictures of underpants, and made moon rock cakes. Pupils also spent time this week making “poppy rings”.

Newsletter No 1 / 6th November 2009

Happy NOVEMBER Birthday to: Jacob Day, Amy Freeman, Max Lansley, Lola Odell and Ella Perring.

During November we are focusing on the core value of UNITY

Comenius Project Developments
During the first half of this school year our focus is on Turkey; Turkish culture, history and geography, art, dance and music. It is very timely that the third project meeting will be hosted by our partner school in Izmir this week, along with teachers from all four partner schools. The visit will enable us to gain a greater understanding of the Turkish education system, experience a day in our partner primary school and see Turkish culture and architectural heritage at first hand. We are also armed with a long list of questions from our pupils so will be busy finding out the answers!
On Tuesday 10th November we are having a Turkish Dance workshop led by a professional dancer. We will be presenting a performance for parents in the Hall at 3pm – all welcome!

Cold Weather Clothing
A number of children are coming to school without coats and are, inevitably, feeling the cold at playtime. Please could all pupils come to school with a coat/jacket every day this term so they can keep warm! Thank you.

Book Fair from 17th - 20th November 2009
We are looking forward to holding a Book Fair in the school hall from Tuesday 17th November to Friday 20th November, both before and after school. The commission from the fair allows us to buy books for each classroom and the non-fiction library, so every purchase helps us to get new books for school. There are hundreds of exciting books to choose from and the leaflet sent home earlier this week, and the posters on display in the hall, show a small selection of the titles that will be available.

Catch It, Bin It, Kill It!
No doubt everyone is aware of the current NHS guidelines to help prevent the spread of cold and ‘flu’ viruses. As part of this campaign pupils have been given a free sample of Kleenex tissues this week.

Little Bears News
End of a Chapter:
Having been the face of Little Bears Pre-School for 7 years and looking after the children of many families in Stadhampton and surrounding villages during that time, we need to let everyone know that Nikki Howlett will be leaving Little Bears at the end of this term, on 18th December 2009.
This week Little Bears have enjoyed making firework pictures and sandwiches.
