MEERKAT Champion of the Week

We are delighted to share the names of our "MEERKAT Champion of the Week" award in each class last week as follows;

Reception – Austin M-F

Class 1 – Ollie P

Class 2 – Morgan D

Class 3 – Thomas C

Well done to you all!

Swimming at the Abbey Sports Centre

Class 3 pupils begin their swimming sessions on Monday 27 February. They will have 6 sessions up to the Easter Holiday. As always, we very much appreciate a ‘voluntary contribution’ of £2 per session per pupil towards the hire costs of the pool at the Abbey Sports Centre (OCC no longer fund this) and the transport costs. Cheques for swimming contributions should be payable to Stadhampton Primary School please. Thank you.

Recorders

A reminder that pupils in Class 2 and Class 3 will have recorder lessons, on Mondays, starting on Monday 27 February until the Easter Holidays.

Football Tournament at RAF Benson

Well done to the pupils in Classes 2 and 3 who represented Stadhampton School at this week’s partnership football tournament. We came an admirable 3rd out of 6 teams in each age group. Here are some comments from the children;

“Yesterday nine selected Year 3 and Year 4 pupils went to play a football tournament. We played five other teams which were Chalgrove, Watlington, R.A.F. Benson, Ewelme and Lewknor.

We all had a great time with many goals scored and we came third. Thank you to Mrs Singleton and Mrs Hutton-Price for taking us.” – Report by Mia Gravett and Casey Price

“On Wednesday 22 February students from Classes 2 and 3 participated in a football tournament, both coming third. It was a tight competition and the windy conditions made for a great atmosphere. Ewelme and Watlington dominated getting one win and one second place a piece, us, Chalgrove, Lewknor and RAF Benson weren’t as lucky. We all really enjoyed it.” Report by Daniel Ellis

Thank you to Mrs Singleton for managing the teams and to Mr Cove, Mr Hursey and Mrs Hutton-Price for their support. Thank you also to Mrs Singleton and Mrs Turner for washing the match kits afterwards!

World Book Day Vouchers

Every child in school will be given a World Book Day voucher on Friday 24 February to take home as part of the annual World Book Day initiative. The voucher can be redeemed at participating bookshops and can be exchanged for a special World Book Day book or be worth £1 off the cost of a children’s book.

A reminder that pupils (and staff!) are invited to dress up as a character from a book and pay £1 donation on Friday 3 March (see last newsletter and Diary Dates below).

ELLI Project Assembly

Our latest character in the ELLI Project was introduced by Class 1. They did a short role play, with the characters, introducing ‘Creative Unicorn’ who helped the others with writing poems. We learnt about experimenting with ideas and taking risks too.

Run a Mile a Day Initiative

Following the popularity and positive impact of the ‘Run a Mile a Day’ initiative piloted in Class 3, we will now be extending this to Class 2. This will start from Monday 27 February so please could all pupils in Class 2 have their trainers available every day – although we plan to ‘run’ 3 times a week, the days may vary depending on the weather! The children will not be expected to run a whole mile but run, jog or walk one or two laps of the playing field. If you would like to find out more about this initiative the following website is very helpful http://thedailymile.co.uk

New School Meals Menu

A new school meals menu which begins on Monday 27 February has been uploaded to the school website. Hard copies are awaited from Food and More and will be distributed to families as soon as they arrive. A copy of the new menu is also on display outside the school office.

Community News:

The Village Prescription Run - A plea for help...

Did you know that each week there is a service available to collect prescriptions from Berinsfield Surgery which can then be collected from the village shop for those who for varied reasons are unable to get there themselves?  The service will also take people to appointments on that day.  Along with volunteers, Ann Tothill organised this service for many years and a huge thank you must go to all involved.

We now need a new co-ordinator and volunteers to continue this service.  If we are unable to find enough people regrettably it will have to stop.  The time commitment is quite minimal as it is organised on a rota basis.

If you are able to help or want to find out more, please contact Stephen Dawson on 07729 902427 or email s.dawson78@yahoo.co.uk

Annual Survey Request from the Governing Body

The Governors are keen to hear your views on how well the school is meeting your expectations, what we do well and your thoughts on what needs to be done differently. A reminder that the deadline for the return of forms was 3.15pm on Friday 10th February but the Governing Body are happy to extend this until Monday 20th February so that parents have more time to complete the form. Thank you to everyone who has already returned their completed questionnaire for each child they have at school.

Class 1 – Adam B

Class 2 – Arun D

Internet Safety Day

On Tuesday morning we joined in with the national ‘Internet Safety Day’ by having a morning assembly. Each class presented an aspect of what they had learned. There were posters, facts, slogans chanted, songs and role play dramas all shown. The pupils enjoyed learning from each others’ presentations and particularly liked the CBeebies internet song. Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the assembly and see the Powerpoint presentation afterwards. If you would like a handout with useful information and websites and/or a copy of the Powerpoint presentation, then please ask in the school office or Mrs Manzie for one.

Friday Morning Teaching Assistant (TA) in Class 3

We are pleased to say that after Half Term Mrs Mel Gravett will be taking on the role of TA in Class 3 on Friday mornings on a regular basis until the end of the year. Mrs Gravett is already employed by the school as a TA in her role as Forest School Leader, is well-known by all the children and we look forward to her support in the classroom. Mrs Gravett will continue to lead our Forest School sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Cheques for swimming contributions should be payable to Stadhampton Primary School please. Thank you.

World Book Day 2017

This year for World Book Day, the School Council has thought about how children would like to celebrate World Book Day. Children have expressed how much they enjoy dressing up, so this year children are welcome to pay £1 to dress up as their favourite book character and bring the book in if they have a copy. The money raised will be divided equally between the School Council and the Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity which helps to make life better for seriously ill children in the UK.

World Book Day is on Thursday 2nd March but we will be celebrating on Friday 3rd March.

Following World Book Day, from 6th March – 17th March, children are keen for parents, carers, grandparents, governors or any other family member to come and read a story to a class at the end of the school day. If you are interested, please talk to your child’s class teacher.

We will be distributing World Book Day Book Tokens, one per pupil, during the first week back after Half-Term. The tokens are valid from 27 February to 26 March and can be exchanged for a free World Book Day book or give £1 off any book/audiobook at participating workshops.

‘Jian-Zi’ Competition

We held our annual Jian-zi competition last Friday, as part of our school activities linked to Chinese New Year. It was highly contested this year!

PictureCongratulations to Thomas Cove who was the overall winner of the school Jian-Zi competition with a score of 364! Will Parkes was in second place with a highly commendable 355!  Year 5 winner was Lorenzo Elliott who scored 31; Year 4 winner was Joshua Hursey who scored 5; Year 3 winner was Casey Price who scored 4; Year 2 winner was Dexter Elliott who scored 3; Year 1 winner was Ollie Parkes who scored 4 and the Reception winner was Austin Mason-Fowler who scored 2.

Report by Thomas and Will: “We all loved the Jian-zi competition this year and everyone enjoyed taking part.”

We await the results from our partners in Hazlach School, Poland, who hold a similar event, to find out the international results!

After-School Chess Club in the second part of Term 2

The membership of the After School Chess Club has been low in the first half of Term 2, with only 4 pupils in Years 3-6 choosing to attend. It would be helpful to know whether those pupils who have attended this term would like it to continue and whether any other pupils would be interested in joining a chess club after the February Holiday if we decide to continue with it. Pupils from the school take part in an annual UK Chess Challenge and attending Chess Club gives them a definite advantage if they would like to participate in that. Please ask your child to let Mrs Hopkins know if they would be interested in Chess Club again on Mondays after the February Holiday. Thank you.
