Newsletter No 18 / 18th June 2010

Watlington Partnership of Schools Summer Activity Sheet
A copy of the above sheet was sent home to each family, via book bags, earlier this week.

School Fete
We would like to thank the PTA, and all concerned, for the fantastic fete held here last Saturday. It was wonderful to see so many people from school and the local community enjoying themselves and for our pupils to present their dances. And now over to the PTA ...

PTA Message
School Summer Fete – a huge thank you and well done to everyone involved in the Fete on Saturday. Thank you to those people who helped get it off the ground and to everyone who helped on the day. Thank you also to the many parents who donated things to sell as well as everyone who bought raffle tickets. All our combined efforts managed to raise a huge £1521, so thank you and well done. A special thank you to all those who did dances and demonstrations, it certainly made fantastic viewing and created a really good atmosphere for a quintessential community event. The winners of the raffle are listed at the end of this newsletter. The only prize to be claimed is for a J. Blackburn ticket number 337 – please check your stubs and let me know who to give the prize to. The winners of the cress animal competition were: Sophie (6-8 category) and Alice (9-12 category); the winners of the best dressed umbrella competition were: Isobel (5 and under category) and Abby (6-8 category). All entries won a prize.

Chiltern Chase – The turnout was very impressive taking into consideration many had been out partying the night before! Eleven runners did the 10k run, some for the first time and everyone came home in very good times. The runners on the day were: Nathan Manzie, Marc Oakley, Keith Browning, Karen Amery, Nige Wright, Karen Cove, Lucy & Dave Ellis, Jane Marshall, Sarah Lowman & hubby, and John Turner. If you would like to sponsor the team please pop your donation in an envelope and write on the front whether you would like it to go to Little Bears, School or a 50:50 split between the two. All sponsorship to Mrs Hopkins by the end of June please.

Sports Night Bar & BBQ – 16th July weather dependent.

Lost property found after the fete:
A black plastic piece which looks like it may be part of a gazebo
A child’s star shaped hairband;
A dark grey Zara cardigan. Items held in the office for safekeeping.

Use of our swimming pool
The pool has now been microbiologically tested and a clear result has come back. Please continue to send swimming kit into school each day as the pool is now in use.

Oxford University Research Links
Over the last few days we have welcomed Hei Won, a PhD research student at Oxford University, into school. Hei Won is undertaking a reading study to clarify how children read and organise words in their minds and has been working with our Year 4 and Year 5 pupils. Pupils enjoyed working with Hei Won and found the activities both interesting and fun. It is a priviledge to have been approached by Oxford University to participate in this research study; our pupils may be able to help pupils of the future.

Partnership Cricket Tournament
Congratulations to our cricket team at the cricket tournament this week. Here is a tournament report wriiten by Robbie Scragg and Ben Drake:
On the 16th June, 9 cricketers went to Ewelme to play kwik cricket at the Watlington Partnership Cricket Tournament. Stadhampton played Watlington first, then played Ewelme. Stadhampton won both matches. We qualified for the top two places so we went to the final against RAF Benson. Stadhampton won with 66 runs for 4 outs and RAF Benson scored 62 runs for 2 outs. Thank you to Mrs Manzie, Mrs Scragg, Mr Diment, Mrs Turner and Mrs Banting and well done to Robbie Scragg (captain), Alex Birtles, Ben Drake, Benedict Diment, Oliver Perring, Peter Roe, Rory Pattisson, Jordan Lafford and Lucy Banting for playing so well!

Little Bears News
World Cup Mania has hit Little Bears this week! Without giving too much away before Sunday, the children have been busy making Father’s Day cards. We enjoyed assembly on Monday with FS1 and Year 1 and also singing with Miss Mould on Thursday. We continued our theme of “On the Sea and Pirates” this week, moving onto “Under the Sea” next week.
