Newsletter No 2 / 1st May 2009

Happy May Birthday to: Lucy Banting, Hannah Bradford, Ruby Dallimore, Benedict Diment, Maisie Matthews, Rory Pattisson and Tazmin Vale.

During May we are focusing on the core value of UNDERSTANDING

Learning Platform
Class 3 pupils have been using the LP in the classroom and at home. They have been uploading documents – Word and Powerpoint, into the Robin Hood Interest Space. They will be contributing to the Robin Hood Wiki and will be posting work into the Tower of London Interest Space. They have enjoyed creating their V-Me’s (electronic images of themselves) and contributing to class discussions in the Class 3 Interest Space.

Thank you to everyone who’s e-mailed the office this week with their e-mail address. So far we have approximately 55% of families who have supplied their e-mail address. Once we have reached approximately 80%, we shall issue user names and passwords to parents so that they can access the Learning Platform. From Friday 5th June, newsletters will routinely only be sent to parents electronically, so do please let us know if you do not have e-mail facilities so that we can ensure that we send home a paper copy. If you haven’t done so already please e-mail the school office at office.2455@stadhampton.oxon.sch.uk so that we have an e-mail address for as many families as possible.

World Record Skipping Attempt
On Thursday 30th April all pupils and staff had skipping ropes ready at 11am and took part in an attempt to break the world record for the greatest number of people skipping simultaneously. Fortunately the rain held off! We skipped for 3 minutes (some finding this harder than others!) and a list of participants’ names was sent to the organisers and we will let you know the outcome. Thank you to families who contributed donations to Alder Hay Children’s Hospital – it’s not too late to add to this collection and we will let you know the total next week.

PTA News
Cakes Needed! Please remember to bring along your cakes to the Car Boot Sale on The Green at Stadhampton on Monday morning (4th May) so we can sell them at the PTA refreshment stall. Bring them along by 0830 or no later than 0930.

Car Boot Sale – volunteers still required on the day to help sell refreshments/ direct car booters. If you can help even for just half an hour come along and join in.

Clothes Recycling – thank you for the bags of clothes. We are waiting to find out how much we were able to raise and will let you know.

Stadhampton School (“baseball style”) caps are now available from Mrs Howlett priced at £3.50 each.

Change 4 Life Leaflet

As part of the Government’s Change for Life initiative, which you may have seen on television, we have been asked to distribute the attached “how are the kids?” leaflet to all families. If you complete the questionnaire and return it to Change 4 Life, you will receive a customised Action Plan.

Books for Schools Tokens
Thank you to everyone who collected Books for Schools tokens for us from The Times newspaper. We sent off our order earlier this week to claim 18 free books.

New French Book
Madame Brookes, our French teacher, has just published a new book in her “Berthe” series. Further information and ordering details are available on the attached sheet.
This week, we have also welcomed Marion Cupet, a French student from the Lycee Louis Jouvet in Paris, into school for two days as part of a work experience opportunity.

Little Bears News
This week Little Bears enjoyed making pizza. They have also been looking at “growing” words such as roots, stems, rain and sunshine and have had fun playing outdoors.

Newsletter No 1 / 24th April 2009

Learning Platform
Thank you to everyone who’s e-mailed the office this week with their e-mail address. So far we have approximately 50% of families who are willing to receive the weekly newsletter electronically. We hope to significantly increase this percentage over the next few weeks. If you haven’t done so already please e-mail the school office at office.2455@stadhampton.oxon.sch.uk so that we have an e-mail address for as many families as possible.

Class Topics/Areas of Study
Please find attached to this newsletter a letter from the class teacher/s outlining the topics/areas of study that pupils will be covering in Terms 5 and 6.

Mrs Rosemary Wells
After nearly 24 years as a Teaching Assistant at Stadhampton Primary School, Mrs Wells has decided it is time to hang up her painting apron and reading folder and retire. Mrs Wells has dedicated herself to the pupils and staff at school and has witnessed many changes. A number of former pupils, who have benefited from Mrs Wells’ support over the years, are now parents themselves and have children who are currently pupils at school, who in turn are being supported by Mrs Wells. She will be greatly missed by everyone. We shall say a formal “farewell” to Mrs Wells at the end of year assembly, but, fortunately, it will not be a complete ‘goodbye’ as she is planning to visit school and support pupils in a voluntary capacity, on a regular, but less frequent, basis.

Key Stage 2 SATs
A reminder that all pupils in Year 6 will be taking their end of Key Stage 2 SATs throughout the week beginning Monday 11th May. Year 6 pupils have been well-prepared by Mrs Sutton but experience has shown that they would also benefit from a sensible amount of sleep prior to, and during, that week! These papers are marked externally and we expect the results to be received at school before the end of Term 6.

SATs for Years 2 – 5
Pupils in Years 2 to 5 will also be completing SATs papers during the week beginning Monday 11th May. The timetable is less rigid but logistics dictate a similar format to the Y6 timetable. The Year 2 activities (end of Key Stage 1 SATs) may continue into the following week. All pupils will have had experience in class lessons of tackling similar SATs questions. The Year 2-5 SATs are marked by school staff using national mark schemes. Results are also subject to LEA moderation procedures. The results of these tests/activities complement the on-going Teacher Assessments carried out on each pupil.

Advanced Notice of SATs 2010 Dates!
We have been advised by QCA that 2010 KS2 SATs will take place during the week 10–14 May and respectfully request that holidays are avoided at that time.

Guinness Book of Records Skipping Attempt
At 11am on Thursday 30th April we are participating in an attempt to break the world record for skipping! This involves as many pupils as possible skipping simultaneously for 3 minutes. We hope everyone will take part so please could all pupils have suitable footwear in school. Pupils may also like to bring in a skipping rope from home that day but it is not essential as we have many ropes in school. The record attempt is being promoted and organised by Edventure, who are also using the event to support Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Donations to this worthy cause (50p suggested) would be welcome on the day. We have to register all participants’ names with Edventure immediately after the event so please advise us before the event if you do not wish your child/ren to participate. Thank you.

Visit by pupils and staff from Arcos, Spain
On Thursday 23rd March we welcomed 20 pupils and 4 teachers from a primary school in Arcos de la Frontiera, in Spain. This school was a former partner in a previous Comenius project but we continue to maintain links. Most years the oldest year group (aged 12) spend a week in England which includes a day visit to Stadhampton School and Oxford. This year their visit to school included a tour of both the school and Little Bears, a short concert by our pupils and a joint playtime. We managed to win the inevitable football match 1-0!

After-School Club in the Portacabin
Our After-School Club is now ‘up and running’ and is open to all school pupils and children attending Little Bears (who are over 3 years old) from 3.15 to 5.00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The children who have been attending have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and so have Mrs Howlett and Mrs Hopkins! Currently, Mondays are the most popular sessions but we do still have vacancies every day. Please talk to Mrs Howlett or Mrs Hopkins if you are interested in a place, even if it is at short notice or not on a regular basis.

School Improvements
During the Easter holiday we have had a number of improvements made to the school building. Class 3 has been redecorated, cloakrooms in each classroom have been repainted and the cloakrooms and ladies toilet have also been re-floored. We have also had improvements made to the heating system, including thermostats fitted to all radiators to help us be more energy efficient.

PTA News
Easter Chocolate Raffle – thank you to everyone who donated prizes and bought tickets – this event was hugely successful with an astonishing £183 raised and lots of chocolate eaten! All prizes have now been claimed.

Car Boot Sale 4th May – we will be running the Car Boot in conjunction with villagers on this date as well as having a refreshment tent, therefore more helpers required if possible please. We also need cakes, muffins, biscuits, tray bakes, etc. to sell on the day. Any not sold will be sold at a cake sale at school on the following Tuesday. Please bring your cakes into school on Friday 1st May or bring along to the car boot sale nice and early on Monday 4th May (by 8.30am at the latest please)

Cookery Books – we still have a small number remaining to be sold. They will be on sale at the Car Boot on Monday 4th May, and also from Sarah Madry or Mrs Hopkins.

Please find attached the Watlington Partnership Information Sheet.

Little Bears News
We have been enjoying the lovely weather playing outside with the sand and water, talking about growing plants and what they need to grow. We have been making pictures of flowers using hand prints for the petals. Thank you to all those who attended our recent coffee morning which raised £50. We would like to welcome Amanda Lavene and Helen Buckley to our staff.

Newsletter No 6 / 3rd April 2009

Happy APRIL Birthday to: Thea Diment, Daniel Green, Jamie Lavene and Rosalind Mannering.

During April we are focusing on the “core value” of HUMILITY

Learning Platform
As we mentioned in a previous newsletter, the implementation of the Learning Platform is complex and will take time to be fully operational throughout the school. Pupils in Class 3 are already familiar with Digital Brain, the Learning Platform’s predecessor, so it is logical that they are the first to access the Learning Platform. When we come back after the Easter Break Class 3 pupils will be given their usernames and passwords and will be able to access interest spaces dedicated to class projects. These interest spaces will include Wikis and discussions as well as work to download and upload.
Thank you to the parents who have sent in their e-mail addresses this week. Please e-mail the school office at office.2455@stadhampton.oxon.sch.uk and put “Newsletter” in the subject line and your e-mail address in the body so that we can enter as many parents as possible onto the school information system.

Car Park and Children’s Safety
Thank you to the drivers who have responded to our recent reminders about driving with due vigilance and adherence to the 5mph speed limit. We currently open the school car park to parents/carers to reduce congestion in Cratlands Close. The increase in use of vehicles, however, also generates a rise in the number of pedestrians in the car park which, in turn, increases the potential risk of an accident occurring. We have recently received reports that a number of pupils are running around unaccompanied in the car park and that drivers are fearful of a serious accident happening (small children are especially hard to see). Before and after school pupils are the responsibility of parents/carers and should be kept under close supervision at all times. We are in the process of working with the LEA to change the layout of fencing to improve pedestrian safety and provide a parent/carer waiting area within the school grounds but such changes take time. In the meantime we ask that pupils are met at the pedestrian gate and those who are being transported by car are then accompanied to the car by an adult. Responsible use of the car park by all will significantly reduce the chance of a tragic accident. Thank you.

After School Club
After school club will begin on Monday 20th April for participating pupils. A Stadhampton School bag has been given to the pupils who have already signed up to the club so that they can bring clothes to change into, etc. There are several places left if anyone would still like to give it a try.

School Meals
Please find attached to this newsletter a copy of the new Spring and Summer 2009 Menu. The price of school meals remains at £1.95 and orders should be placed on MONDAY morning please for that week.

PTA News
Thank you to everyone who has brought in plant pots. Last Friday the gardening club children planted them up with sunflowers, sweet peas, and other flowers. Hoping that the weather co-operates, the plants will be available for sale at the PTA refreshment stall at the Stadhampton Car Boot Sale on May 4th, so look out for them!
Chiltern Chase – please see enclosed leaflet to register yourself as a Stadhampton Steamer.
Clothes Recycling – reminder to have a clearout over Easter ready for the clothes recycling 24 April.
Car Boot Sale 4th May – this is the event that PTA needs volunteers to help with the refreshment stall at the car boot sale. The active PTA members really struggle to cover this event and we are in real danger of it being cancelled if we cannot get additional people to help out on the day. This would be a great shame as it has the potential to raise over £500 if the weather is good. We only need you for an hour – this way we can spread the workload and ensure no-one has to be there all morning. Please let us know if you can help – we need approx 8-10 people in total to serve refreshments and direct booters to parking bays.

Sporting Success
A number of pupils participate in individual sporting activities, outside school, at a national level. Two of our current Year 6 pupils have achieved recent success in their chosen sport; Cameron Vale has recently gained a junior black belt in Karate, and is one of the youngest in the country to do so, and Kezia Lawson plays badminton at county level and recently played in the national badminton tournament for Under 11s representing Oxfordshire. She is currently one of top players for her age group in Oxfordshire and is 16th in the country. We congratulate them both.

School Council News
Thank you to everyone who made or sent in cakes earlier this week. The School Council were pleased to raise £34.90 from this event and £18.80 from the sale of puzzle pages.

Little Bears News
We have been saying goodbye to Molly Hulcup as she is joining a pre-school in Chalgrove and to Louise who starts her maternity leave today. We had great fun completing our Treasure Hunt this week and will announce next term how much we raised. We have been busy making Easter decorations. The winner of the Easter Egg Hunt was Jake Day and we raised £16.50. We would be very pleased to welcome everyone to our Coffee Morning on Thursday 9th April between 10am and 12 noon.

Newsletter No 5 / 27th March 2009

SATs Week
Year 6 pupils will have their statutory end of key stage 2 tests during week beginning 11th May and parents are respectfully requested not to book holidays, dental appointments, etc at this time. Pupils in Years 2-5 will also have tests at this time.

Pupils Work-Viewing Evening
It was good to see so many families take up this opportunity and we hope you found it a beneficial development.

Learning Platform
As we prepare to introduce the Learning Platform, we feel it is important to keep you updated regarding how it will affect home/school communication and your involvement with your child’s education. Once it is fully operational you, as parents, will be able to access school information at any time and see computer based home/class work that your child is working on. By accessing your unique “parent space” you will be able to read news that is posted, relevant to the class your child is in, and you will receive the weekly newsletter by this means. In time the paper format of the newsletter will be phased out. In preparation for these changes it is important that we receive e-mail addresses from parents as soon as possible. Please e-mail the school office at office.2455@stadhampton.oxon.sch.uk and put “Newsletter” in the subject line and your e-mail address in the body so that we can enter as many parents as possible onto the school information system. Please also see the Learning Platform posters in school for more information. Thank you.

“Notes of Harmony” Comenius Project Visit 27.03.09-01.04.09
Ten teachers from our Comenius partner schools in Poland, Germany and Turkey, including all three headteachers, will be arriving this weekend to participate in the project meeting hosted by Stadhampton School. Their visit includes project meetings, trips to Oxford, Cheltenham (Gustav Holst’s birthplace) and, of course, Stadhampton. On Monday 30th March our guests will spend the day in school, be entertained by our pupils in a concert and have opportunities to talk to the pupils about their schools as well as finding out what it is like to be a pupil at Stadhampton School! The concert will include a variety of singing, dancing, recorder playing, piano-playing and drama. Please would all pupils in Years 3-6 remember to bring in their recorder and school PE kit. Thank you.

Energy Mosaic
During the warm weather at the end of last week Mrs Pattisson painted the sun detail in the centre of our energy mosaic recently established in the school grounds. Although further painting is required (and warmer weather!) before the mosaic can be used as a circular stage by our pupil, it is an exciting development which we look forward to using. Please do go and look at it, if you have the opportunity, after school. Many thanks to Mrs Pattisson for her artistic talents, time and dedication in supporting this project.

Notes about next week:

Newsletter No 4 / 20th March 2009

Thank you to Mr and Mrs Birtles who have very generously provided each family with a bunch of daffodils for Mothering Sunday, again this year.

Maths Evening held on Tuesday 17th March
We were pleased to welcome 10 parents/grandparents to our second Maths Information Evening for Parents on Tuesday evening. The session was, once again, led by Jane Liddle, an LEA advisor, who presented an animated insight into the progression of multiplication and division strategies currently taught in primary schools and gave parents ideas on how to best support their children at home. Copies of a useful booklet entitled “Helping your child with Maths” were distributed at this meeting and further copies are available in school for anyone who was unable to attend. They will be accessible via class teachers, by request, or at the Work Viewing Evening on Monday 23rd March.

Mid Year Summary Reports
This year we have introduced an additional means of updating parents on pupil progress halfway through the academic year. All pupils should have brought home a Mid-Year Summary Report sheet on Wednesday. This is a single sheet indicating each pupil’s progress towards key targets for their year group in English, maths and science. We hope this information is helpful to you.

Work Viewing Evening – Monday 23rd March
A reminder that parents are invited to view their own child/ren’s work and class displays with, or without, their child/ren any time between 3.30 and 6pm on Monday 23rd March. Teaching staff will be available for brief consultations, if required, in the classrooms during this time, but on this occasion there is no appointment system. Access will be available via classroom external doors or through the front door.

Learning Platform
We are in the process of developing the Oxfordshire Learning Platform for use in our school. This is a county wide, web-based application which is being rolled out to every Oxfordshire school in phases. We are in Phase 3; this is one of the early phases. The fact that we are part of an early phase demonstrates our forward thinking about the role of computers in school. When it is fully “up and running”, the Learning Platform will be an efficient form of communication between school and home as well as a fun and exciting teaching and learning vehicle. We will be introducing the Learning Platform to the school in stages, because of its complex nature. To start the introduction, Class 3 will be using the Learning Platform for classwork and homework activities after the Easter Holidays. We will keep you updated about developments in the weekly newsletter.
We would like to be able to send school newsletters by e-mail to as many parents as possible so that we can communicate more efficiently, reduce costs and also have consideration for the environment. It would be very helpful if parents could e-mail the school office at office.2455@stadhampton.oxon.sch.uk with “Newsletter” in the subject line and your e-mail address in the body so that this could be implemented as soon as possible. Parents who already receive their newsletter electronically do not need to resend this information. Thank you.

After –School Football Tournament report by Joshua Drake and Robbie Scragg
On Wednesday 18th March 7 keen footballers walked on to the pitch. Their manager was Mrs Manzie and supporters were Mr Pattisson, Mrs Roe and Mrs Perring. We thank them for taking and encouraging us. We won 2 matches, drew 2 matches and lost 1. We beat Watlington B 2-0, RAF Benson 1-0, then drew to Watlington A 1-1 and Chalgrove B 1-1, then lost to the overall winners, Chalgrove A 2-0. We came 3rd out of 6 and we were the smallest school there.

Comic Relief

Thank you for your support of Comic Relief. All 50 red noses were sold, there was a huge take up of school dinners that day (with several lucky prize winners!) enabling Food with Thought to donate a further £8.50 and the school collection raised an additional £45.55. “Writing Something Funny for Money” in school inspired some very amusing stories, jokes and poems and wearing red noses throughout the day was an interesting experience – especially during registration! This year, for the first time, it was possible for schools to choose how the money we raised will be spent by Comic Relief. In a whole-school assembly pupils voted overwhelmingly to support children in Africa who don’t live at home. Thank you.

Advance Notice
The Booster Maths Class will not take place on Tuesday 31st March because of the School Council Cake Sale.

School Council Cake Sale
A reminder that the School Council Cake Sale will take place in the hall immediately after school on Tuesday 31st March. Cakes of all shapes and sizes will be welcome - please bring them in on the morning of Tuesday 31st.

Don’t forget next week is the last chance to take part in the School Council Easter Activity. Easter Activity pages are available from Mrs Sutton in Class 3 from Monday to Friday of next week and cost 80p. Please note that the competition closing date is Friday 27th March.

PTA News
Thank you for the raffle tickets which have been sold and returned to school this week.

Little Bears News
This week Little Bears have enjoyed playing outside in the sunshine. They have also been making more things for their treasure hunt and would appreciate a couple more shoe boxes, if possible. Children enjoyed making “spring” pictures on the computer and painting pictures of daffodils. They have also had fun making pasta necklaces and trying to find rectangle shapes in the Little Bears classroom.

Newsletter No 3 / 13th March 2009

Driving within the school car park
We have, this week, received several complaints from parents about the speed at which a very small minority of parents are driving both into and out of the car park. This matter was only recently mentioned in the school newsletter dated 6th February 2009 when parents were reminded of the need to observe the 5mph speed limit within the car park and the approaches to/from it. The safety of children is of paramount importance and ALL PARENTS are requested to please take care and be extra vigilant about their speed in these areas.

Second Maths Evening for Parents on 17th March
Our second Maths Evening for parents led by LEA Maths Advisor Jane Liddle, takes place in school from 6.30-8pm on Tuesday 17th March. This meeting will focus on progression in the teaching and learning of multiplication and division throughout the primary age range. The previous meeting was well-attended and parents reported that they had found it informative. We hope that as many parents/carers as possible will take advantage of this opportunity to gain a better understanding of current teaching methods in schools and ideas on how to best support pupils at home.

Swimming Goggles
A reminder that swimming goggles may be worn by pupils participating in swimming lessons at the Abbey Pool, Berinsfield, if the chlorine is found to be an eye irritant. However, in line with Health and Safety guidance recommendations, the wearing of goggles must be at the written request of parents/carers, goggles must conform to BS 5883 and pupils need to be able to secure and remove their own goggles safely.

School Council
From Monday 16th to Friday 20th March, the School Council will be selling Easter Activity Pages (each class will have their own version). They will cost 80p each and will include puzzles, word-searches, colouring-in, dot to dot etc. The completed activity sheets are to be handed in by Friday 27th March when judging will take place. A prize will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize in each class for the best entries.

PTA News
The PTA have had their attention drawn to a company called the School Holiday Club which has had favourable review in the national press. The School Holiday Club is an organisation that “works with the major tour operators, low-cost airlines and accommodation suppliers and subsequently have a huge selection of great value holiday offers.” They pledge to donate at least 2% of the cost of each booking to PTA funds.
Whilst the PTA cannot endorse any particular holiday club/tour operator, if any family is planning a holiday it might be worth investigating what this organisation has to offer. All you need to do is go to www.schoolholidayclub.co.uk, select Oxfordshire, Oxford and Stadhampton Primary School from the drop down list. Holidays can be booked via the website or by phoning one of their travel advisors. You could end up with a great holiday deal while helping boost PTA funds.

Plant Pots
Julie Pattison is in need of plastic plant pots for the gardening club so the children can plant their seeds. All donations to Julie please, or leave with Mrs Hopkins (preferably in a bag) for collection.

Easter Chocolate Raffle
You should have received an envelope in the reading folders this week containing a small number of raffle tickets to sell. If you would like any more to increase your chances of winning lots of chocolate please contact Mrs Hopkins or Sara Wright/Ame White.

Little Bears News
This week Little Bears enjoyed using the computer to create some lovely pictures, use the mouse and print them out. They also made sandwiches and ate them, and made lamb puppets. A successful Parents’ Evening was held on Tuesday. Donations of old newspapers would be most welcome!

We will be asking parents to sell cloakroom tickets (£1 per strip of 5 tickets - £5 per family) next week. The raffle will be drawn on Friday 3rd April at school at 13.30 before we break up for the Easter holidays.

Red Nose Day – Friday 13th March 2009

To support this event we shall have red noses available to purchase at £1 each from the school office from Monday – once they’re gone, they’ve gone! School dinner that day will also have a “Comic Relief” theme and for every meal served that day “Food with Thought” will be donating 5p to the charity appeal. This year it is not a non-uniform day for pupils and we request that all pupils wear normal school uniform (this includes no hair gel or nail varnish). Instead we are asking pupils to donate 50p and bring in “something red” which will form the focus for a humorous piece of writing in the literacy lesson that day. The most entertaining contributions will be shared in our whole-school assembly. Red noses may be worn, although some children find them uncomfortable and may only wish to wear them briefly.

Little Bears News
This week Little Bears have enjoyed making fruit salad, reading our favourite books and spending lots of time playing in our garden. They have also started making the treasure boxes for the treasure hunt and would still appreciate donations of a few more shoe boxes. Packets of seeds are on sale for £1 a packet.
